Macao’s Trade Transformation and New Peaks in Service Exports

Known for its vibrant tourism industry, Macao is experiencing a dramatic change in its import and export patterns. In the first quarter of 2024, Macao's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) hit MOP 104.81 billion (USD 13.10 billion), marking a strong year-on-year growth of 25.7% in real terms. This growth is largely fueled by a remarkable increase in service exports, which climbed by 30.3%. Particularly noteworthy is the 62.7% surge in gaming services exports, highlighting the ongoing strength of this industry.

However, the goods trade sector faces some challenges. Exports of goods fell by 13.6%, while service imports decreased by 3.5% and goods imports dropped by 1.4%. This trend emphasizes the necessity for Macao to adjust to evolving market conditions and refine its trade strategies.

Regarding external trade, merchandise exports in the first quarter of 2024 rose by 4.5% year-on-year, reaching MOP 3.29 billion (USD 0.41 billion). This increase is linked to a growing demand for jewelry, travel items, handbags, and watches, indicating a resilient consumer market. Conversely, total merchandise imports fell by 8.1% to MOP 32.6 billion (USD 4.08 billion), resulting in a trade deficit of MOP 29.3 billion (USD 3.66 billion), which is a 9.3% decline from the previous year.

Macao’s key trading partners include the European Union, Mainland China, Hong Kong, the United States, Japan, and Switzerland. These connections are vital for diversifying Macao’s trade portfolio and bolstering its economic resilience.

A promising area for growth lies in logistics and express delivery services. With the rise of e-commerce, the demand for effective logistics solutions is becoming increasingly evident. As more consumers turn to online shopping, the need for fast and dependable delivery services is expected to grow.
