Overview
The Netherlands have emerged as a major franchising hub in Europe, offering a thriving business environment and a newly established legal framework that strengthens the rights of franchisees. According to the Global Franchise Team, the Dutch Franchise Association indicates that 903 franchises operate in the country, and in 2020, these generated around €37.8bn across 33,566 locations. In total, the Netherlands’ franchise industry employs more than 375,000 people – around two per cent of the country’s total population.
A Newly Regulated Franchising Market
Introduced in 2021, the Dutch Franchise Act requires franchisors to provide detailed information to potential franchisees before contract agreements. This regulation is not a surprising document for franchising professionals, but makes the Netherlands differentiate from other European markets that remain largely unregulated. The Dutch parliament introduced this act because franchising as a model was seen as highly valuable to the Dutch economy, but franchisors were previously viewed as much more dominant in the agreement than franchisees (The Global Franchise). This new act ensures a balanced relationship between franchisors and franchisees. Under the new rules, franchise agreements must be more transparent, with clear information about financial obligations, performance expectations, and potential risks. Franchisors are required to provide detailed pre-contractual disclosure. This new environment strengthens the protection of franchisees while encouraging responsible franchising practices across the board.
With these regulations in place, international franchisors have greater confidence in entering the Dutch market and is a big reason why many global brands are choosing the Netherlands as their European franchising hub.Ideal for Expansion
Beyond the legal framework, the Netherlands offers an appealing business environment characterized by innovation, and accessibility. Ranked among the top in the world for its competitive economy, the country is known for its business friendly policies, highly skilled workforce and strategic location with Europe. In 2023, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ranked the Netherlands as the world’s 7th most innovative economy.
Furthermore, the Dutch have a straightforward approach to business which helps make efficient decisions. They prioritize consensus and require a clear operational structure. Many Dutch professionals speak English fluently which creates a good collaboration with international patterns.
Embracing Innovation and Sustainability
In recent years, the Dutch government has been providing financial incentives and support to businesses that focus on green and sustainable practices. For franchises, this means access to government initiatives that can help reduce operational costs while contributing to a positive environmental impact. Companies that prioritize sustainability are often favored by Dutch consumers and they often give tax benefits to small SMEs, making this an important consideration for businesses entering the market.
